Wed, Aug 15: Aletsch Glacier, Switzerland

We took a gondola to the UNESCO World Heritage site Aletsch glacier viewing area (8600 ft).  Aletsch is the largest glacier in Switzerland (14 miles long), and is 3,000 feet thick at the juncture of the three glaciers that combine to form the Aletsch glacier.  Very Impressive.

And a view of Bettmeralp perched on the ledge:

We ate lunch at top.  Paul had a Rosti – a plate of hash browns with an egg on top (you can get veggies and ham mixed in as well).  Rosti was common in Switzerland for lunch or dinner, and Paul had it a couple more times.  They also had a great mixed salad which we had several times – lettuce, carrots, beets, potatoes, radish, corn and other veggies.

There were hang gliders here and other sites in Switzerland, including Lauterbrunnen valley, our next stop (Mürren).
